Sensitive skin: how to care for it
Sensitive skin: how to care for it

“Why me?” This is the most common question among people with sensitive skin. From an annoying itching, which can often turn into a proper irritation, to unesthetic redness, a sensitive skin can cause many effects.

Oftentimes, we underestimate what our body is trying to tell us. Due to the frenzy of our daily routine, we tend to conceal our imperfections, or even avoid finding a prompt solution. Before we can find a remedy to the issues mentioned above, we must ask ourselves: what are the causes of a sensitive skin?

Don’t blame your pet and don’t think you’re now allergic to your live-in partner, the real causes of sensitive skins are sometimes surprising.

A sensitive skin means a hyperactive skin. Let’s be clear: it has nothing to do with your well-known multitasking and the many things you do in one day…

Hyperactive skin refers to the unusual reaction our skin has to some external elements. It might be congenital or happen during very particular moments of our life.

A healthy lifestyle? Your skin will be grateful

Achieving a great shape isn’t the only outcome of a correct diet. From eating to sleeping, every part of our life influences our skin’s health, and our whole body as a result. Sure, a little cheating is allowed when you’re sitting on the couch, watching your favorite tv show, but it’s important not to make a habit of it.

Vitamin C is one of our skin’s best friends! In fact, it can really help strengthen our capillaries. So no need to worry if you consume many orange juices, lemons and kiwis: they’re really good for you! Furthermore, vegetables in season, legumes and buckwheat can be a real treat to your skin!

It might sound obvious, but it’s better to underline it: it’s best to avoid smoking and drinking alcohol and coffee if you have sensitive skin. Yes, we know: lemon gin cocktails are served with a lemon slice, but you’ll still feel pretty guilty!

A regular life and 7/8 hours of sleep can help your skin. Stress greatly affects our body’s well-being. Try to live as peacefully as possible, leaving work stress at work, and find some moments to relax: not only will this help your mind, but your skin as well.

Internal or external factors? Everything has a meaning

Age must be factored in too. Children and newborns’ skin is more sensitive than adults’, it’s thinner and thus more exposed to chemical or atmospheric agents. Also, as we grow old, our skin becomes more sensitive, due to the decreasing number of Aquaporins, microscopic channels that transport water through the skin.

Among the so-called “internal” factors causing sensitive skin, we can find hormonal imbalance, like during pregnancies, periods, menopause or puberty.

Did you notice your skin becoming more sensitive when spring comes or when the weather gets colder? Don’t worry, cold and heat influence the secretions produced by skin glands. When the temperature is low, so is the secretion of substances which maintain the so-called protective acid mantle, while in increases with the heat. In the latter case, staying too much in air conditioning can leave your skin dry.

Medications or some therapies are also an important factor. For instance, going through radiotherapy can lead to sensitive skin, even if it’s for a limited time.

Cleanse and protect your skin the right way!

There are some easy-to-follow precautions that can help deal with problems caused by sensitive skin. One example? Changing your personal hygiene habits.

It’s widely known: there’s nothing better than a nice shower or a hot bubble bath to regain your energies after a long day. However, using very hot water and vigorously rubbing your skin with a towel are not recommended habits.

Try not to spend too much time in the shower or bathtub, especially if you live in areas with a high percentage of limescale in the water; pat your skin with the towel when drying yourself off, you’ll see improvements right away. Do not forget to pick a fitting cleanser, i.e. with mild surfactants that hinder dehydration.

Choosing the right facial tissue or towel for your sensitive face also plays an important role. Nicky Soft Touch was designed with this goal in mind, to ensure comfort and softness in each daily use. Thanks to Nicky Soft Touch, available in regular and extra-large sizes, it’s now possible to caress your skin, with a feeling of fresh cleanliness.
